Smart/Intelligent Grid Development and Deployment in Thailand (Smart Thai) Launching Seminar

The World Alliance for Thai Decentralised Energy (WADE Thai), together with its global counterpart, the World Alliance for Decentralised Energy (WADE), and Full Advantage Co., Ltd. (FA), officially launched a European Union-funded project dubbed as 'Smart Thai' at the Pullman Bangkok King Power hotel on March 1, 2011. This project, which received a grant under the Thailand-EU Cooperation Facility (TEC), aims to improve the sustainable economic and social development of Thailand through the efficient delivery of sustainable, economic and secure electricity using Smart/Intelligent Grid systems based on EU models and technologies. Another objective is to transform the generation, transmission and distribution network of Thailand through the enhancement of the capacity of Thai private and public sector organisations in introducing and promoting Smart/Intelligent Grid systems thereby contributing to the national development goals of Thailand in the area of environment, climate change and energy security.

In order to save energy, reduce consumers' cost and improve reliability, a smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using two-way digital technology through control automation, continuous monitoring and optimisation of distribution system. It facilitates communication among all the power system players, providing vertical information to all participants. Smart grid leads to innovation of control model, higher quality of electricity and customer service, access to cleaner energy, demand response control and more sensitive energy technologies.

There are three major components of the project:

  1. Mainstreaming Smart/Intelligent Grid systems in the generation, transmission and distribution activities in Thailand
  2. Capacity building, knowledge management and institutional development
  3. Supporting the introduction of pilot Smart/Intelligent Grid systems

Smart Thai Programme Coordinator Mr. Vazzan Tirangkura believes that "Smart grid is the solution of future power control and management. There is a hope to a greener, more convenient and efficient Thailand."

The launching seminar successfully introduced the project to its target audience. Enthusiastic key speakers left the impression that Smart Thai is progressing strongly through the cooperation of all stakeholders.
